    Notes
    • (Research):At first I thought that this Thomas was the son of John of Petham. Not only do I know that that John had a son Thomas (mentioned in the wills of both John and his wife), but if this Thomas wasn't him I don't know what became of him (there is no will of a Thomas of Petham). John's will shows he was of Harmansole in Petham parish; this Thomas was of Harmansole in Lower Hardres. A look at the map shows that these are not two separate Harmansoles but one, straddling the parish boundary.
However, it seems clear that that Thomas was under 20 when his father wrote his will, not old enough to have grown-up sons when he wrote his own, and yet the will of this Thomas implies they were old enough that Thomas felt no need to limit any bequests to when they reached a certain age. In fact he even made them both executors of his will.
The only suggestion they may have been quite young was that he also appointed his brother William as overseer of the will. Neither John of Petham nor his wive's will mentions a son William.
It looks like the Harmansole 'link' was a red herring and Thomas was another one.

A Richard of Wye died in 1547 leaving sons Thomas and William. This Thomas could be that son of Richard.
Richard's son William also had a son Thomas as well as a Richard. Richard also had a number of other children including a William so alternatively this Thomas could then be the son of William. (I'm not sure when that Thomas was born; it must have been between 1505 and 1526, most likely not before about 1515, but he could have been old enough to have more-or-less grown-up sons by 1556).

    • I know that Richard had a son William (from later docs referring to William's father as a Richard), but the other children of Richard shown here depend on this being the Richard who died in 1547. If I am wrong and it was Richard the son of Sampson (d. 1488) who died in 1547 then the other children go with him.
