Thomas HALKE

-
Name Thomas HALKE Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1548 - based on date of his first (known) marriage
Gender Male Occupation 1587 Merchant - Recorded as such at the time of his marriage to Phenenna
Servant 5 Oct 1587 St. Peter’s Church, Canterbury, Kent, England Margery Smyth's burial - From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 3 Nov 2014):
"[1587] The /5/ October was buryed Margery Smyth s[er]vant to Thomas Halke"
Civic duty 1 Dec 1603 to 28 Sep 1604 Canterbury, Kent, England Sheriff - Under a charter of 1461 given to Canterbury by Edward IV Canterbury became a County in its own right, and so needed a Sheriff of its own.
They were generally a appointed for a year from Michaelmas, but for some reason in 1603 Thomas, the new sheriff, did not take up the office until two months later, 1st December.
Civic duty From 1608 to 1611 Canterbury, Kent, England Alderman - Thomas Halke was noted as an Alderman when his wife Phenenna was buried and at the time of his own burial.
Civic duty From 1610 to 1611 Canterbury, Kent, England Mayor Will 1 Feb 1610/11 Written - 'Thomas Halke' of Canterbury wrote a will 1610/11, proved 1611, register office and original survive in the Canterbury Probate records (on m/f at the CCA and Maidstone)
Refs: PRC/32/42/17 and PRC/31/59 H/2
Buried 23 Dec 1611 St. Peter’s Church, Canterbury, Kent, England - From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed on 3 Nov 2014):
"Thomas Halke Alderman was buryed Decemb. 23. 1611"
In his will Thomas refers to being buried in the church with his late wives, and a stone with an inscription, but it is very unlikely that this stone survives in a legible form.
Even a book published in 1793 which generally has name, date of burial and age of those recorded on memorials in the church, has as the only possible reference all that is noted is 'Thomas Halke died Jan ... 1575'; if this is the stone for Thomas and his family is appears little remained legible over 200 years ago.
(in 'A Tour through the Isle of Thanet and Some other Parts of East Kent; including A particular Description of the Churches in that extensive District; and Copies of the Monumental Inscriptions, &c.' by Zechariah Cozens)
Probate 10 Mar 1611/12 Died - Before 1623 since Thomas Harvey left a bequest to Richard Halke AND to his children, but only to Thomas Halke's children.
Siblings
3 brothers and 1 sister Patriarch & Matriarch John HALKE, b. Est 1433, d. 1492, Wye, Kent, England(Age ~ 59 years) (2 x Great Grandfather)
Amy, b. Abt 1526, d. 16 Feb 1596/97 (Age ~ 71 years) (Mother)Notes - I am guessing that Thomas was the son of John and Amy.
Thomas Harvey, husband of their daughter Joane, leaves bequests to his sister's children, followed by
"Alsoe to Richard Haulke and his Children and to Thomas Haulkes and William Haulkes Children to every ..."
No relationship is mentioned to any of them, but Thomas Harvey had a brother-in-law Richard Halke (still living) and a brother-in-law William (by then dead), and I think it virtually certain that these were the Richard and William Haulkes referred to. It therefore seems likely that Thomas Haulkes was also a brother-in-law.
In addition, Thomas and Joan's son William Harvey mentions Amy, daughter of his loving 'Unckle Mr. Tho. Halke' in his will.
A Michael Halke was baptised in Canterbury in 1588, son of a Thomas Halke; I think it was likely that that Michael was the one who was ordained and followed this Thomas's brother William as Rector of Upminster. It seems likely, therefore, that this Thomas and the father of Michael were one and the same.
When this is combined with the fact that Thomas of Canterbury named his first son John and his first daughter Amy, the names of his parents, I think the evidence is pretty strong and so I am showing Thomas who had a family in Canterbury as the son of John and Amy on this tree. - (Research):There were several Thomases in Canterbury at around the same time so care needs to be taken with any records referring to a Thomas in Canterbury that could be this Thomas.
- a Thomas seems to have been a scholar at Canterbury School, at a time overlapping with this Thomas's son Michael, I thought he might be a bro of Michael but can find no evidence for this.
- a Thomas Haucke was buried at All Saints in 1603 - prob the one who left a will proved that year
- a Thomas Hauke appears in some St Pauls PR pages as Churchwarden incl 1603. - - In 1623 a 21 year old Mary Hawke of St Paul's married, with the consent of her father Thomas.
That Thomas was clearly having children at a similar, possibly overlapping, time to this Thomas.

Father John HALKE, b. Abt 1520, d. 28 Mar 1604 (Age ~ 84 years) Mother Amy, b. Abt 1526, d. 16 Feb 1596/97 (Age ~ 71 years) Married - A John was clearly father of Sarah and Amy (from their baptisms).
Relationship between Thomas, Joane, William and Richard (as siblings) from wills.
That the father of the 4 siblings was also a John is from Joane's father being named in marriage register when she married (from Hastingleigh website, data transcribed from ATs) and a Court of Chancery case (1593 or 5, C 2/Eliz/D5/6, I've phototed but not yet had time to read) in which the defendants were 'John Haulke of Hastingleigh, Kent, yeoman and his son Richard Haulke' seems likely to refer to this John and his son and so agrees with the marriage entry for Joane, and more conclusively Richard refers to his father John in his will.
The age of Amy suggested on the brass in Hastingleigh Church means it was probably a different John who was the father of Sarah and Amy. I do not know which family the John who died in 1576 belonged to.
