- Shown as aged 27 in the 1851 census. This also shows birthplace as Hockadon, Devon, but I cannot find such a place in Devon.
There was a baptism of a John Ashton in 1823 in Hartland (the only one in the DFHS transcripts in 1823 or 1824) which seems the most likely to be this John, and not too far from where he was living in 1851.
There was also a John Ashton baptised in East Stonehouse in 1822, which is close to where he married in 1847 (Stoke Damerel), but he was probably there due to being in the navy.
Gender Male Retired 1851 Greenwich Out Pensioner - Despite being aged only 27 John was shown as a Greenwich out pensioner in the 1851 census.
I guess he was the John Ashton who served in the navy 15 Feb 1843 to 30 June 1847. (TNA ref ADM 29/39/153 - not yet seen)
Died Bef 1860 - Assuming reason for his son George being adopted by his wife's brother George is correct.
