Name George VOGWELL Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1778 Devon, England - Place from the 1841 census (though this is not the most reliable of items).
Rounded down age given as 60 in 1841 census (i.e. if accurate born 1776-1781), age at death given as 73 in burial register, 72 at registration (transcription of GRO index), suggesting he was born 1777-9.
Gender Male Occupation From 1816 to 1826 Walreddon, Whitchurch, Devon, England Game keeper? - Game list, of persons who have obtained game certificates, were in 3 parts - general certificates (in 1819, £3 13s 6d each), Game Keepers not being assessed servant (in 1819, also £3 13s 6d each), and game keepers being assessed servants, at £1 5s each).
A George fell into the latter category, being appointed by William Courtenay, esq. for Walreddon (in Whitchurch Parish, to the south-west of the village).
Lists for Devon for 1800 - 1859 are on the GENUKI website
These lists include George Fogwell in 1814, and George Vogwell every year from 1816 - 1826 (just shown as G Vogwell in 1823), each time at Walreddon.
I thought at first this was my ancestor George, who seems to have moved to Whitchurch parish in 1784. However, there are two snags with this. Still living in Whitchurch when he wrote his will (1805), he seems to have moved to Walkhampton soon after, and given that the Walreddon estate was not near the Whitchurch / Walkhampton parish boundary I think it unlikely he would have worked at Walreddon. (My ancestor George seems to have farmed at Babyland). Secondly, whilst one could assume that George was not included after 1826 because he died that year, the dates don't quite fit. George died in January 1826, but the last list listing a George Vogwell was published in the paper on 21st September than year, saying it was "PERSONS who have obtained GAME CERTIFICATES for the year 1826:". Obtaining a certificate for the year sounds like something that might be done in advance but at the bottom of the item it is recorded "Made up to the 20th September, 1826". Despite this I think that it COULD be this George who was a gamekeeper.
This George's will should make it clear whether or not he was the gamekeeper.
If it wasn't him, I think it was probably this George, who was landlord at the Ship Inn, Morwelham in 1841.
Occupation 1841 The Ship Inn, Morwellham, Devon, England Publican - Shown as an Innkeeper when his son John married in 1847.
Residence 1850 Whitchurch, Devon, England - At the time of his death
Died - GRO ref: Vogwell, George q1 1851 Tavistock RD 9 371; GRO online index shows age at death as 72
Buried 15 Feb 1851 St. Andrew’s Church, Whitchurch, Devon, England - From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 19 Sep 2012):
under "Burials ... Whitechurch ... 1850" - "George Vogwell, abode Whitechurch, buried Febry. 15th., age 73, ceremony performed by Richd. Sleeman Vicar"
Notes - (Research):George and his descendants are found, like my Vogwell ancestors and their close relations, in Tavistock and nearby villages. However, I am not sure that there is any close connection between them.
His age is close to that of George baptised in Widecombe in 1780, son of my 5 x great grandfather, also George Vogwell. Could it be that George? I don't think so, as a George was buried in Widecombe in 1798, with his age given as 18, i.e. fitting perfectly witha 1780 birth. I have not found another George born about 1780. My Vogwell 5xgt grandparents seem to have moved to Whitchurch about 1784 or 5, so it is a little surprising to find their son George buried in Widecombe, but of course he could well have found work there, especially as his parents probably still had contacts - friends and relations - there. However if there was another George born about 1780 (and if there was, the only record for one who died in 1798 would probably be a baptism, so only one record would have to be unfound) then this George, of Morwelham and Walreddon, could be the one from Widecombe.
Alternatively, and probably more likely, this George could well be linked to the Vogwells who were already in parishes on the western edge of Devon and eastern edge of Cornwall from the C17th - Buckland Monachorum, Calstock and Landulph. He could be the son of the George baptised in Landulph in 1753, but whose father I believe was from Buckland Monachorum.
I had hoped that the will of my 5 x great grandfather would name his children living when he wrote it, but unfortunately it doesn't. I will look for a death duties record in case that does.
There may be pub licence records which would show when George was at Morwellham, and whether the dates are consistent with him being the gamekeeper before this.

Family Jane Marrack NICHOLAS, b. Abt 1799, d. Mar Q 1844, Tavistock Reg Dist, Devon, England (Age ~ 45 years) Married Between 1815 and 1830 - Can't find a marriage for George and Jane on FMP; if they married in Devon would probably be there (DFHS index transcripts at least), but may have been in a non-conformist chapel not included or over the border in Cornwall.
Also not found baptism of their son John - could be for same reasons as above, or if they weren't married or he was born before they married could have been baptised as John Nicholas. (He was shown as born Devon in the 1841 census, though, and I believe was the John shown in subsequent censuses as born in Tavistock)
