Maria LANGLER

-
Name Maria LANGLER Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 25 May 1819 Plymouth, Devon, England - Shown as aged 51 in the 1870 census (26 Aug 1870) and as 31 in the 1851 census (30 Mar). Place from the 1851 census.
Gender Female Occupation From 1850 to 1851 Haldon House, Dunchideock, Devon, England Laundry maid - (The address of Haldon House is Dunchideock, but the 1851 census show it as being in the Civil Parish of Kenn)
Marian Warriner's notes record that Maria was head laundress for Lady Palk at the time she married George. The 1851 census shows her simply as laundry maid - though there were no other laundry staff shown, so it may be accurate that she was in charge of the laundry. The number of servants present was small for so grand a house, possibly because no family were present and some would have been with them, but possibly also due to financial constraints.
The 3rd Baronet preferred to gamble and socialise rather than look after his estates, and had to leave England to avoid his creditors! Although the 4th Baronet tried to turn things around the 5th Baronet was forced to sell up.
Maria was shown by her maiden name and single in the 1851 census; presumably she would have lost her job if it was known she was married.

Since this info. from family knowledge agrees with a GRO ref. for the marriage of a George Vowill in all respects (date, place and bride's name) I'm sure it must be right.
This source gives how the couple met and the actual date.
