    Gender Male
    Occupation 1821
    Mariner
    • John George was Captain of the schooner Freedom. Keith Matthews Name Files show it to be a 92 ton vessel built in Dartmouth in 1814, but the DHC (DRO) catalogue shows it to have been built at Teignmouth in 1821.
      In July 1821 it was registered at Exeter, being owned by East Teignmouth shipwright, Arthur Owen and a Thomas Gotham. I'm not sure which Thomas this was - I think most likely this was John's brother of the name , though he would have been only 22; maybe it was their uncle. Though I don't know what became of him, he definitely survived infancy, but was possibly not still alive. The ship was later based at Liverpool.
      In 1828 John George was captain of the Horatio, a 182 tons brig owned by Job, Bulley and Co. of St. Johns (Newfoundland) and Liverpool. (from Keith Matthews Name Files, Gotham file p.38).I have other information regarding the Horatio to add.

    Borough of Liverpool Common Council Elections
    • Entry in poll book (the last column has no header, but with the three values of blank, P or T clearly indicates how the individual voted):
      "[No. 5967 [Christian Name and Surname of each Person at full length] Gothan, John George [Nature of the Property rated.] house [Street, Lane or other Place in this Parish where the Property is situated for which he is now rated.] Vine street P"

      As the rate-payer on a house in Vine Street, John took part in the poll for the election of sixteeb councillors for the Borough of Liverpool, to supply the annual vacancies in the common council for the year 1840.
      John's house was in Abercromby Ward where there were two candidates, James Procter, Esq. and Thomas Todd, Esq. One councillor was to be elected for each ward to take the place of one whose period in service was completed; in Abercromby ward that was Doctor James Carson.
      In 1839 Mr. C. Bushell, the Conservative candidate, had been elected by a narrorw majority, 318 votes to the 310 for Mr. Henry Ripley the Radical candidate; this time the margin was to be wider.
      John voted for Procter and it was he who was elected, with 317 votes as against 282 for Todd. I have yet to discover which party each represented. (Strangely, the 1840 does not seem to show it).

    Occupation 1841
    Mariner
    • From the census
    Died Between Jun 1841 and 4 Feb 1843
    • His wife was a widow when she died, and had been at the time of the 1851 census.
      Since there seems to be no death registration entry for him it may well be that he died at sea or overseas.
      Admon was granted on 4 Feb 1843, so he had died by then.

      unto Jane Gotham Widow the relict of the said deceased"

      FMP provide no way to see the start of the book, nor a reference but given that all other entries on the page or facing page were for people living in Chester Archdeaconry I think that was the Court in which the admon. was granted
    Notes
    • I first thought it was probably this John who was married to Jane as I didn't know of another John of the right sort of age who it could be.
      I am now sure that this John is the one who was married to Jane Tatham. Although Jane's will did not clarify this, due to only mentioning members of her own family, the fact that John was shown as 'John George' in the 1840 Poll Book which also shows he was living in Vine Street, and that John and Jane were living in Vine Street at the time of the 1841 census provides sufficient evidence.

    • Which Nathaniel married Elizabeth - this one or the one baptised in 1757?
      I have now found plenty of evidence pointing to it being this Nathaniel who married Elizabeth Whidborne; I think it was this Nathaniel because:
      - of the names Nathaniel and Elizabeth gave their sons - the Christian names being the same as those found in this Nathaniel's family and this Nathaniel's maternal grandfather being named 'Nathaniel Harris' the name of the couples first son;
      - of the social standing of this Nathaniel's family - appears more in line with Elizabeth's;
      - this Nathaniel's sister Martha married Elizabeth's brother Richard so the families were clearly in contact;
      - a number of members of this Nathaniel's siblings families moved to the Liverpool area, like his son Thomas (though the other Nathaniel's great nephew probably died in Liverpool too, so can't attach much weight to this);
      - Thomas Gotham, father of this Nathaniel, had a grandson Thomas (named in his will); I don't know who this would be if the family were that of the other Nathaniel.

      of Dartmouth, to Miss Tatham, daughter of Mr.
