The will of John Halke, d. 1545

John is a 1st cousin 13 x removed of mine

In the name of god Amen The xviith Day
of Marche in the yere of our Lorde god mlDxliiiits, And in

the yere of the Reigne of our Sov[er]aigne Lord Henry the
viii th by the grace of god of Englande Frannce and
ireland kinge Defender of the faithe and in earthe of the
Churche of Englande and Irland the Supreame head
immediatly under god the xxxvi th I John Halke theldre
of the parisshe of Petham make this my last will
and testament in mann[er] and forme folowinge First
I bequeith my Saule unto Almightie god our blessed
Lady Saynct Mary and to all the holy compaigny of
heaven And my body to be buried in the Churchyard
of Petham aforsaid Also I will unto the highe
Aulter there for my tithes by me forgotten xiid It
Also I will unto Johan my wiff all my moveable
goodes for time of her liff Furthermor[e] I will
that the forsaid Johan my wiff shall pay unto
Thomas my sonne when he shall come to thage of
xxti yeres vi li Also I will the forsaid Johan
my wiff shall pay unto Johan my Daughter vi li
when she shalbe of thage of xviii yeres. And if
it fortune either of the said Thomas or Johan to
departe this mortall liff before the daye and the
yere that the forsaid Johan my wiff shulde pay
them the xii li before rehersed Then I will that
my childe then beinge a liff shall have the whole
twelve poundes when it counts to thage of before
rehersed whether it be Thomas or Johan. And if
it fortune the forsaid Thomas and Johan to dep[ar]te
bothe this mortall liff before the day and the
yere before rehersed Then I will that

Johan my wiff shall have vi li of the forsaid xii li
And the other vi li I will unto Richard and John my
sonnes if they be then a liff Also I will have at my
buryinge and monthesmynde and yerismynde xv masses,
and a Seame of wheate and xii busshells of malte to
be distribute in dedes of charitie Also I will have two
masses and a Dirige ev[er]y yere for the space of viith
yeres in the p[ar]ishe churche of Petham, And ev[er]y yere
by the sapce of the forsaid vii yeres I will have two
busshels of wheate and iiio busshels of malte to be
distribute in deades of charitie; And I will that
Richard and John my sonnes shall have {beare} all the
charges of my buryinge monthesmynd & yerismynd
and of the obite by the sapce of viith yeres befor
rehersed. Also I will unto the rep[ar]acon of the church
of Petham vis viiid, Also I will unto Richard
my sonne my greate cawdron and two Silv[er] spones
Also I will unto John my sonne my great brasse
pott and two silv[er] Spones Also I will unto
Th[om]as my son two silv[er] Spones The residue
of all my moveable goodes and all my debtes
I geve and bequeith unto Johan my wiff; It

and tene[me]ntes wtin the Countie of Kent First I will
Johan my wiff shall have my tene[me]nt that I dwell
in and Forde crofte for the terme of her lif And
after her decease I will the forsaid tene[me]nt & crofte
unto Thomas my sonne in Fee simple / Also I will
unto thesaide Thomas my son my tene[me]nt lyinge at
Garlynge called Culmelles, And my tene[me]nt lately
purchased of Nicholas Coiffe in Fee symple /
I will unto Richard my sonne my tene[me]nt called
Wilcockes and all my landes lyinge at Stonestreat
and a tenement lyinge in the parisshe of Sellinge
wt all the landes therto belonginge to hym and
his heires in Fee symple, Also I will unto
John my sonne my tene[me]nt lyinge at garlinge in the
occupyinge of Richarde my son wt all the landes
therunto belonginge to hym and to his heires in
Fee symple, Also I will the forsaid John shall
pay yerely unto Johan my wiff – xxs for the
time of her liff / Furthermor I will Johan my
wiff shall have the profett of my tene[me]ntes called
Chilmels and my tene[me]nt lately purchased of
Nichas Coiffe unto the tyme that Thomas my son
be of thage of xx yeres / Also I will if that it
fortune Johan my wif to departe this mortall
lif before Thomas my son be of thage of xxth
yeres then I will Edmond Coup[er] shall have the
p[ro]fett of thesaid landes to the use of the said thoas

my sonne shall have the rule of Johan his sister
and all the goodes that I have geven her unto she
be of thage of xviii yeares.

My translation of the Probate statement:

[Proved etc 25th May in the Year
of Our Lord one thousand five hundred and 45 By the oathes of Robert
Langton cleric and William Yonge witnesses
and approved etc. The burden of execution by a commission to the
executors etc. sworn Given etc.]
